Life Update: I moved to France

Hello-Bonjour readers! I shamefully return on this platform after abandoning it for yet another a year. Apologies! Pandemic fatigue is to blame…. As you can tell by the title, I have moved to France! Some of you know I lived in Belgium for 5 years prior to moving to the Unites States where I’ve been living for the past 16 years. I unfortunately hadn’t had the change to return Europe since then which I think caused me to develop a strong sense of dépaysement as the French would say, or disorientation (from moving to such an unfamiliar place/culture). I’ve been thinking about going back to visit my loved ones in Europe for a while now. However, after the pandemic started, I felt like a two weeks of vacation wasn’t going to be enough, especially due to quarantine expectations. I figured I should just move back to Europe and so I did.

I officially landed in France on September 16th at Charles de Gaulle airport, in Paris. As I stood outside of the airport waiting for my uncle to pick me up, I became overwhelmed with mixed emotions regarding my decision to move out here. I was happy with the idea of seeing my family members and friends again but I worried that I might have made a giant financial mistake. After all, I quit my comfortable full-time job in order to pursue a sabbatical year ( 7 months in reality) during which I will be teaching English part time in a small town in the north of France. Luckily, my experience living in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region has overall been great despite some occasional unpleasant moments that life likes to throw at us. Needless to say, I do not regret my move and I think it was exactly what I needed in order to reinvent myself and grow.

I have more to share with you but I don’t want this post to be super long so I will end it here. However, if you’re interested in knowing what my experience moving to France from Raleigh, NC, was like, check out my moving vlog below.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post and I will see you in the next one.
